Mahathir chides Singapore for dispute with Thailand

The Straits Times, January 30, 2007

BANGKOK - Malaysia's outspoken former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has accused Singapore of being insensitive and selfish in its handling of a dispute with Thailand, a Thai newspaper said.
In an interview to be aired on Wednesday morning by Thai TV Channel 5, Tun Dr Mahathir accused Singapore of undiplomatic behaviour, The Nation newspaper said on its website.

'Singapore doesn't really care about the opinion of its neighbours,' he was quoted saying, adding that its decision to receive ousted Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra on a recent visit was 'unfeeling and not sympathetic'.

He added that 'Singapore believes the most important thing is what profits Singapore.'

The interview was conducted by Nation senior editor Thepchai Yong.

Tun Dr Mahathir also commented on Thai accusations that Singapore could be eavesdropping on Thailand's military communications, saying 'That's the kind of things they do,' according to the report.

Singapore has denied the electronic spying allegations.

Asked about his experience of dealing with Singapore, he said: 'You'll get nowhere with them either being nice or being tough, they only think of themselves.'

An apology by Singapore would be an 'honourable' way for it to mend its relations with Thailand, he said.

Tun Dr Mahathir has previously said it was impossible to negotiate with Singapore and resisted moves to allow Singaporean companies more investment opportunities in Malaysia - especially in companies considered national assets.

Thailand-Singapore diplomatic relations were strained when Mr Thaksin visited Singapore earlier this month and met with Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister.

Thailand called the meeting inappropriate, given Mr Thaksin's ouster from government, and suspended a planned visit by Singapore's Foreign Minister.

Singapore has said that Mr Thaksin's visit was a private one between old friends.
