Continued helping hand for Indonesians

ST Forum, The Straits Times, March 24, 2007

THE views expressed in Mr Lau Chee Kian's letter, 'Indonesian actions tax S'poreans' generosity' (ST, March 22), are typical of most Singaporeans' attitude towards some of the Indonesian leaders' seemingly unfriendly behaviour.

Singaporeans by nature are sympathetic and generous when other countries, especially our neighbours, are struck by tragedies and natural calamities. We never hesitate to despatch financial aid, food and clothes. medicine and manpower to places that need our help.

We do all this because of our concern and love for humanity, no strings attached whatsoever. Our agencies, such as the Red Cross and Mercy Relief, used to work tirelessly to help the many people devastated by the tsunami and earthquakes in Indonesia.

Of course, we are saddened by some of the Indonesian leaders' actions. But this will not prevent us from helping Indonesians again should there be another calamity.

After all, it is the people for whom we want to bring relief. We can take comfort, knowing that thousands of them are grateful and appreciate our humane work.

We must not be unduly upset by the handful of Indonesian leaders who take us for granted.
