GP will make Singapore more vibrant

The Straits Times, May 14, 2007

MINISTER for National Development Mah Bow Tan believes the staging of a Formula One race will make Singapore more vibrant.

F1 is the pinnacle of motor racing. The Government announced on Friday that the Republic had secured the rights to host a grand prix, possibly at night, next year.

During a walkabout at Tampines Street 11 yesterday, Mr Mah, an MP for Tampines GRC, noted that 'mega events like this will help inject even more vibrancy'.

'A global city is not just about nice buildings, it's also about things happening,' he explained.

'So it's an event that I'm sure will be exciting for all Singaporeans.

'And I'm sure it will also be good for us to showcase our city, the bay, the skyline, and our people to the rest of the world.'

The 5.2km street circuit is expected to take world champion Fernando Alonso and Co. past Marina Bay, as well as landmarks like the Esplanade and City Hall.

'Infrastructure-wise, I think the tentative circuit has been worked out,' added Mr Mah.

'We've discussed it with URA, SLA, NParks, LTA and agencies who are involved.

'I'm sure there are a lot of things - nitty gritties - that have to be settled before the race.

'Safety is the main consideration if it's going to be a night race. That in itself will be a major challenge for everyone involved - drivers, organisers and, of course, for infrastructure agencies.

'But, hopefully, we'll be able to overcome it and look to an exciting event come September or October next year.'
