MPs say sorry over sexist 'leak' remark

The Straits Times, May 21, 2007

AFTER nine days of dithering, including issuing, then retracting an apology, the two male MPs who referred to opposition MP Fong Poh Kuan's menstrual cycle in Parliament have apologised publicly for their comment.

Last Friday, MPs Bung Mokhtar Radin and Mohamad Said Yusof each released statements apologising to women 'who might have been offended' by what they told Ms Fong when she complained about roof leaks in Parliament House on May 9.

The two men told her thus: 'What leak? (Ms Fong) also leaks every month.'

The two still have not said sorry to Ms Fong, though. Yesterday, she told reporters their public apologies were 'too little, too late' anyway.
