Upgrade Little India but retain its character

ST Forum, The Straits Times, May 17, 2007

MY HUSBAND and I have visited your beautiful city more than 12 times in the past 25 years and have seen many changes.

We have made friends with many Singaporeans and we try to visit them as often as we can.

We were recently in Singapore and heard there is a plan to upgrade Little India.

May I suggest the following from someone who loves Singapore and is always fascinated with the changes that take place.

It would be a good idea to close all the open drains and fix the uneven pavements and footpaths as I find these a little dangerous. It would be good to make use of the open areas and have seats and shelters from the sun and rain.

There need to be some toilets for the public to use. These will have to be cleaned regularly as so many people use the area. There is also a need for more rubbish bins.

The open areas can be used by the workers who gather there on weekend nights in their hundreds and they can still enjoy their fellowship with one another without blocking the roads and footpaths.

Maybe even some TV screens could be put up there for their entertainment.

I hope Little India does not lose its character because we always encourage friends to visit the area when they come to Singapore.

We have spread the good news about your beautiful city far and wide, believe me!

There can also be more food outlets and people can be encouraged to try local dishes which are different and delicious and inexpensive.

I hope to come again to see the results of the upgrade.

Best wishes from a very happy visitor to Singapore.
