Aussie PM 'disgusted' by party for ex-terrorists

CANBERRA - AUSTRALIAN Prime Minister John Howard will complain to Jakarta about a 'disgusting' incident in which Indonesia's counter-terrorism chief hosted a party attended by a Bali bomber.

Mubarok, who is serving a life sentence for the October 2002 nightclub bombings which left 202 people dead, reportedly attended a party last month for 20 reformed Islamic extremists in the home of Brigadier-General Surya Dharma.

Gen Dharma reportedly defended the affair as part of Indonesia's new 'soft' approach towards fighting terrorism that aims to use informants and ex-militants to influence extremists.

Asked for his reaction to the party, Mr Howard said: 'Absolutely disgusted.'

'I will certainly see that there is an objection communicated,' he told commercial radio on the fifth anniversary yesterday of the attacks in which 88 Australians died.
